Don’t Fall for the Supplement Hype

There is no doubt that targeted supplements can be hugely helpful when it comes to our health, but they can also be harmful. I can’t tell you how many times in my clinic I am taking people off their supplements rather than putting them on more. There’s a vast amount of choice out there; the sheer volume can be overwhelming, even for those of us who keep up with the latest research! The truth is some of them are a waste of your hard-earned money and others may be downright dangerous…

Most often clients give me a long list of supplements they are taking. We have access to so much information these days, but a little knowledge can actually be dangerous when you are unaware of the bigger picture. Quite often people are taking different blends, which all have similar vitamins and minerals. This can be dangerous and lead to overdose of certain nutrients. Similarly, clients are often unaware of the potential of some supplements to interact with their medication, potentially leading to life-threatening complications. As you can see, supplements are not to be popped willy nilly…

Supplement blends labeled as ‘professional’ or targeted at specific health concerns like IBS or menopause are growing, and with them their price tags. More often than not there is a better alternative.

Here are a few of the reasons you want to be very careful with the supplements you take and consult a professional:

  • Nutrient overdose: Some supplements, especially fat-soluble vitamins like vitamin A and D, can build up in your body to toxic levels if you take too much. This can lead to a variety of health problems, including liver damage, birth defects, and even death.

  • Interaction with medications: Supplements can interact with medications you are taking, making them less effective or even dangerous. For example, St. John's wort can interact with antidepressants and birth control pills.

  • Contamination: Dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA as strictly as medications. This means that there is a greater risk of contamination with harmful substances, such as heavy metals or bacteria.

  • Hidden ingredients: Some supplements may contain hidden ingredients that are not listed on the label. This can be dangerous if you have allergies or other health conditions.
